In our last post, we talked about the fact that giveaways are a great way to boost your social media visibility and engagement. This time, we’re coming to you with the how factor — telling you how you can make sure that your next social media giveaway a success.

1. Make your social media giveaway a success by being timely.

Planning your giveaways should be part of your social media content planning session. You shouldn’t just wake up one morning and think, hmm, I think now’s a great time to  give something away online. Rather, you should be strategic. Think through when precisely you want to see a serious spike in engagement (perhaps right before you begin a new service or want to introduce a new product). Also, analyze your audience and determine when precisely the best time is to post a major announcement. Be sure your followers will see that you are doing a giveaway. And, be sure that you are clear as crystal with what the giveaway is, what your followers need to do to be eligible to win, and how long they will have to enter before the winner is announced.

2. Make your social media giveaway a success by being excited — and exciting!

No one is going to be excited about your giveaway if you’re not excited about it yourself. Now’s the time to pull out all the stops on exclamation points, bright colors, and bolded fonts. Your graphics should scream excitement and catch your followers’ attention. Don’t go overboard and make everything bright, bold, and over the top, but certainly make this post stand out from the crowd. Consider building excitement for the post ahead of time by letting your audience know that something exciting is coming. And when you let people know about the giveaway, tell them explicitly just how excited you are to offer this to them! Your excitement will be contagious.

3. Make your social media giveaway a success by staying on brand.

Everything about your giveaway should reflect your brand and who you are. Most businesses give away one of their own products or services, and this is certainly our recommended way to go. For some businesses, however, this strategy doesn’t work as well. So, if you’re local a local service provider for whom it’s not feasible to give away one of your services, consider giving away a product that your audience may find useful or interesting. For example, if you’re a wedding planner and don’t want to give away a free planned reception, you may want to consider giving away a free bridal bouquet from an area florist you partner with. Whatever you decide to give away, be sure it’s something that remains in line with your brand and that will appeal to your target audience.
